The Difference Between a Conventional and UVC Lamp

We live in a world where we face dangers at every scale, and the smallest ones are the biggest threats. I’m talking about threats at the microbial level, bacteria, virus, fungi, all these can be fatal if the proper shielding is not done against them. The worst part is due to their size we can not foresee their coming and this is worrisome, but with the advancements in technology, we have ways to tackle this problem. Amongst many is the UVC lamp (หลอด uvc, which is the term in Thai), a small device but has a large impact on people’s daily lives. This device can eliminate almost all of these microbial dangers and provide a safe environment, they work by deforming the DNA structure of the microbes which renders them incapable of multiplying or destroys them entirely. Its counterpart a conventional lamp can’t help in eradicating these pathogens and hence aren’t suitable for certain uses.

Here let us see the difference between a conventional lamp and a UVC lamp:

The biggest difference between the two is that the factor of disease elimination, a UVC lamp can destroy most of the pathogens present in the atmosphere, by playing with the UV region in the spectrum of light. Whereas a conventional lamp fails to provide this benefit.

The uses of a UVC lamp are plenty concerning maintaining hygiene. A place where this aspect is of utmost importance a UVC lamp takes the spotlight. A hospital, a clinic, a school, a meeting room, places where large gathering occurs, the presence of pathogens in the air can pose as a threat and a conventional lamp can’t do much to help.

A UVC isn’t the best choice to illuminate a room, it does provide glow but not enough, multiple of these would be required to light up a room, a conventional lamp can illuminate a room with just a single unit. But the whole purpose of a UVC light is to eliminate microbes and not for illumination.

Since the UVC light emits the UV type C rays of light, it does pose a slight risk to human health and a conventional lamp does not have this issue. But if recent studies are looked into, with proper handling, maintenance and usage one can limit or nullify the effects from UVC lamps.

When a room is invaded by invisible microbes they tend to linger on for a long time, due to this they accumulate in air ducts, Air conditioner outlets, etc. This accumulation causes a continual threat from these microbes and effects the atmosphere of the space.
