The difference between blinds and curtains might not be obvious, but it has a lot to do with their construction. Though both items can serve to cover windows and other openings, the two are very different in how they function. Curtain opens up by hanging down while blinds open up by folding.
Here are some common differences between blinds and curtains:
1. Adjustment of Light
Blinds are made with horizontal or vertical slats that can be adjusted to let in more or less light whereas, curtains are made with fabric panels that can be pulled closed, either on a curtain rod or pleated header. Certain blinds offer the ability to adjust the angle at which they are lowered, usually with a cord control. However, curtains are not adjustable in this way.
2. Mode of Operation
Blinds can be motorized to open and close automatically and hence, the ease of operation comes with motorized blinds. Curtains require manual opening and closing and they look more elegant and sophisticated.
3. Material
Blinds are often made of wood, fabric or aluminum while curtains are mostly made of fabric or vinyl. Blinds come in different colours and grains to match the decor of your home whereas, you choose from a wide variety of fabrics for your curtains.
4. Cleaning Process
You can clean blinds by vacuuming them or wiping them down with soapy water and a damp cloth. Curtains are too delicate to be cleaned in this way, they have to be washed properly on a delicate setting in a washing machine.
5. Cost
Many times, blinds are more visible in the home than curtains. Curtains may provide a nice accent to your windows, depending on their style and design. Blinds are typically much less expensive than curtains.
Both blinds and curtains are popular window coverings that have many advantages and disadvantages. Blinds are easier to clean, motorized and can be adjusted. Curtains are less expensive, provide a nice accent to windows and look great when hung as a drapery.
